Encuentran que los alimentos orgánicos tienen más antioxidantes
Una investigación dirigida por la Universidad de Newcastle, Reino Unido, confirmó que los cultivos orgánicos y alimentos a base de estos tienen hasta 69% más antioxidantes que las frutas, legumbres y cereales producidos de forma convencional.
Los científicos descubrieron que las concentraciones de antioxidantes como polifenoles son entre 18% y 69% más altos en los productos cultivados orgánicamente, contribuyendo a reducir el riesgo de enfermedades crónicas como cardiovasculares y neurodegenerativas.
Los investigadores analizaron las diferencias nutricionales entre cultivos orgánicos y convencionales y encontraron que un producto de los primeros aporta antioxidantes equivalentes a dos porciones de frutas y verduras no orgánicas.
El profesor Carl Leifert, de la Universidad de Newcastle y quien dirigió el estudio, afirma que la elección de los alimentos producidos bajo estándares orgánicos puede elevar la ingesta de antioxidantes nutricionalmente deseables y reducir la exposición a metales tóxicos.
De acuerdo con el estudio, los cultivos orgánicos tienen niveles significativamente más bajos de metales pesados tóxicos, como el cadmio, plomo y mercurio, contenidos en plaguicidas.
Se encontró casi 50 por ciento menos cadmio en los cultivos orgánicos, metal que es uno de los más nocivos que existen y para el cual la Comisión Europea estableció un nivel máximo permitido en los alimentos.
Los resultados de esta investigación contradicen a un estudio realizado en 2009 por la Agencia de Normas Alimentarias de Reino Unido, según el cual “no hay diferencias sustanciales o beneficios importantes nutricionales” entre ambos tipos de alimentos.
British Journal of Nutrition refirió que la agencia británica basó su estudio en 46 análisis de cultivos, carne y productos lácteos, mientras que Newcastle efectuó 343.
El doctor Gavin Stewart, profesor de Síntesis de Evidencia y experto en meta-análisis en el equipo de Newcastle, indica que la amplia base de datos disponible permitió utilizar métodos estadísticos más apropiados para llegar a conclusiones más definitivas.
